The Tuvaluan Flag contains a blue field with nine stars and the Union flag on the hoist. The Union flag on the hoist symbolizes Tuvalu`s ties to Great Britain.  The nine stars symbolize the nine islands that make up Tuvalu and their positions on the flag are geographically correct when the flag is turned clock wise.  The flag has been in use since Tuvalu became independent from the Gilbert Islands in 1978.
