The national flag of Turkmenistan contains a green field with a white crescent moon and five
stars. Close to the hoist, there is a vertical band that contains five carpet guls stacked above
two crossed olive branches. The green and red colors on the flag have always been used historically by the
Turkmen. The crescent moon symbolizes hope for the future of the country and the five stars stand for the
five provinces of Turkmenistan. The five carpet designs symbolize the five major tribes in the nation. The
flag of Turkmenistan is said to be the most decorated flag on the world and was adopted in 1992 but the
current flag has been in place as of 2001.
