Flag

The state flag of Massachusetts has been in use
since the time of the American Revolution in 1776 but was
not officially adopted until 1908. The flag contains a
white field with the state coat of arms in the center.
The coat of arms is a shield with an Algonquin Native
American with a bow and arrow. The arrow is pointing down
to symbolize peace. A star next to the figure's head
represents Massachusetts' admission as the 6th
US state. On the bottom of the shield is an inscription
that reads “Ense Petot Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem”
(by the sword we seek peace, but peace only under
liberty) which is the state motto.
