Flag

The flag of Maryland was officially adopted in
1904. The flag
contains the heraldic banner of George Calvert, the
1st Baron Baltimore. He is credited with being
one of the founders of Maryland along with his son Cecil
Calvert who used the family’s coat of arms in the
flag. At first
only the gold and yellow was associated with the flag but
during the civil war, the red and white crossland coat of
arms gained popularity especially by those in Maryland that
supported the Confederacy but remained in the Union.
