The “Jolly Roger” or the
flag associated best with pirates is known
as the skull and cross bones flag. The flag was used
by most pirates in the 17th and
18th century. The flag was used on
pirate ships to intimidate the victims to surrender
without a fight. The skull cross and bones flag was
used by four well known pirates, Captains Edward England,
John Taylor, Sam Bellamy and John Martel. The skull
and cross bones flag today is used in pop culture as well
as military units who use the design as a unit emblem.
It is also used to signify any electrical hazard
and poisonous items.
