The flag of Papua New Guinea is divided into red and black colors.  The red, black and white colors were the colors of the German Empire`s flag, which New Guinea was a colony of until 1918.  On the top side of the fly there is a depiction of a silhouette of a raggiana bird of paradise.  On the bottom of the hoist side is a depiction of the constellation of the Southern Cross.  The flag of Papua New Guinea was adopted on July 1, 1971.
