Flag of NEW MEXICO
Picture image of the New Mexico Flag

The flag of New Mexico flag was adopted in 1925. The flag contains a yellow field with the red sun
symbol of the Zia on the center. The red and yellow are to honor Isabella of Castile, her Habsburg heirs and
the conquistadors how explored in her name. The Zia symbol was found at Zia Pueblo on a 19th
century pot. The Zia has a sacred meaning for the Zia. The number four is unique because it represents the
circle of life. There are four winds, four seasons, four directions and four sacred obligations. The circle
in the center unites the four elements.
