The Mauritanian flag contains a green field with a gold crescent and star.  The crescent and a star symbolize Islam, the main religion of the country.  The gold on the flag symbolizes the sands of the Sahara desert and the green represents Islam.  The flag of Mauritania was adopted on April 1, 1959.
