The flag of Maranhão was adopted on
December 21, 1889. The flag contains nine strips colored
red, white and black. On the canton is a blue square with
a white star. The colors on the strips represent the
different ethinic groups in the region. The white star
represents Maranhao and is supposed to be Beta Scorpii,
one of the stars on the constellation of Scorpio is
depicted on the Brazilian flag.
