The flag of Malawi contains three horizontal bands colored black, red and green with a red sun rising on the top black band.  The black on the top of the flag represents the indigenous people of the continent, the red in the center symbolizes the people’s bloodshed in the struggle for freedom and the green represents nature.   The rising sun at the top represents the dawn of hope and freedom of Africa.   The flag of Malawi was adopted on July 6, 1964.
