The national flag of Madagascar contains colors that are symbolic to the country`s history.  The red and white on the flag where the colors of the Merina Kingdom.  The green was the color of the Hova, the social class of peasant commoners that played a major role in the movement for independence against the French.  The flag of Madagascar was adopted on October 14, 1958.
