The Japanese civic flag was adopted on February 28, 1870 but was not adopted as the national flag until August 13, 1999.  The flag contains a white field with a red disc in the center representing the rising sun.  the flag is also known as Hinomaru and was commonly used in the 15^th and 16^th centuries for military banners in the Sengoku Period.
