The flag of Guinea-Bissau contains the three Pan-African colors of red, gold and green. Also on the flag is the Black Star of Africa that stands for the unity of Africa. The red on the flag stands for bloodshed during the fight for independence.  The yellow symbolizes the sun and the green represents hope.  The national flag was adopted in 1973 when Guinea-Bissau proclaimed independence from Portugal.
