Flag

The flag of Germany was adopted on May 23, 1949.
The flag is a tricolor flag with three horizontal band with
the colors black, red and gold. The current flag's colors
represent the unity and freedom of the German people after
World War II. The colors were originally used on the flag of
the Holy Roman Emprie. The flag of the Empire was
yellow with a black eagle with red claws. During the
Napoleonic Wars the
Lützow Free Corps, a volunteer unit of the
Prussian Army used the colors black, red and gold on
their uniforms. After the war the
Lützow Free Corps adopted the flag with the three
equal bands with the colors of black, red and gold for their
fraternity. The students of the fraternity
came mostly from German states and in October of 1817
during a festival to celebrate the Battle of Leipzig, the
colors became a symbol of a unified
Germany.
