Flag

The flag of Delaware was adopted on July 24,
1913. The flag contains a colonial blue field with a
buff-colored diamond and the coat of arms of Delaware in
the center.
Under the diamond is the date December 7, 1787, which was
the day Delaware became the first state of the United
States. The
colors on the flag were meant to reflect the colors of
the uniform of George Washington. The coat of arms was
adopted on January 17, 1777. It depicts a shield in
the center with three horizontal bands colored blue white
and green. Standing on the green is
an ox and above the strips there is a sheaf of wheat and
an ear of corn to represent Delaware’s
agriculture.
Holding the shield there is a soldier to the right and a
farmer to the left. Above the shield is a
ship and below the shield there is a banner with the
state motto “Liberty and Independence”.
