The flag of Benin contains three different colors.  The colors are the traditional Pan-African colors green, yellow and red. The green symbolizes hope, the yellow represents wealth and the red stands for courage.  The original design of the flag was established in 1959 but was changed during the accession of the Marxist regime in 1979.   On August 1, 1990 the old design was put back into place after the removal of the Marxist regime.
